Useful Tips to Prevent a Flooded Basement
If you have ever experienced a flooded basement before, you know how hard it is because it is difficult to clean up and it can also damage precious family possessions. Make your flooded basement experience a thing of the past by preventing it from happening again. Here are some useful tips:
(1) A flooded basement may be caused by a number of reasons. The most common one is due to a natural flooding disaster which is brought about by strong torrential rains overflowing to nearby rivers or lakes. If your home is located near rivers and lakes, make sure to track where the water flows towards your home and then try to redirect the flow next time by using sandbags or man-made dikes. If the overflowing of water is a regular occurrence, installing one or more sump pumps in the basement will help in limiting the amount of water that will be collected in the basement.
(2) A flooded basement may also occur from strong torrential rains that do not penetrate the soil easily. The ground surrounding the home may have a high water table level which causes the ground to easily be saturated by rain water. This causes the excess water to stay on the surface of the yards and lawns and may flow towards the house to cause a flooded basement. If this is the case, then it is advisable to dig out pathways to enable the excess water to flow to the streets where most of the main water drainage systems are located.
(3) Another reason for a flooded basement may be the unevenness of the lawn or yard. Deep portions of the yard may collect water which could eventually flow inside the basement causing it to be water-soaked. The best way to handle this is to fill in the low areas of the yard with soil and making sure that the soil of the yard is compact. Make sure also that the yard is sloping down away from the home to ensure that rain water will run-off towards the water drainage systems located in the street.
(4) Different fixtures around the house such as gutters and downspouts from the roof may also cause a flooded basement if they are not properly maintained. It is important to regularly check the gutters for any obstruction that would prevent water from flowing freely. Remove any obstructions from the gutter. Covering the gutter with a chicken wire mesh can prevent large objects from obstructing the water flow. For the downspouts, a downspout that is facing the foundations of the home may cause water to seep through cracks and pours found in the wall. Reorienting the downspouts so that water will flow away from the house is the recommended procedure to help prevent a flooded basement.
(5) Small cracks found in the basement walls can definitely cause a flooded basement because they can let water found in the soil seep through. To prevent water from seeping in and causing a flood, the small cracks should be caulked up. It is also advisable to finish the basement walls using water-sealing paints. Paints with water-sealant properties will help the basement become more water-tight and therefore helping prevent a flooded basement from happening.
